Home Depot Recalls Patio Umbrellas Due to Risk of Impact Injury

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Offset Patio Umbrellas

Units: About 60

Importer: The Home Depot, of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The patio umbrella and its pole could tip over and strike consumers if the umbrella’s collar or sleeve is not removed prior to closing the umbrella, posing a risk of impact injury to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Home Depot has received one report of a recalled patio umbrella tipping over and breaking. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The patio umbrellas are beige with a brown offset pole. They stand 11 feet tall. The base is a brown cross about 18 inches long.

Sold at: The Home Depot stores nationwide from January 2009 through February 2009 for about $250.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled patio umbrellas and return them to any Home Depot store for a full refund.

Ross Stores Recalls Benches Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: 39” St. Anne Acacia Benches

Units: About 225

Importer: Ross Stores Inc., of Pleasanton, Calif.

Hazard: The bench frame can collapse when weight is placed on it, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Ross Stores has received two reports of incidents but no reports of injuries.

Description: The benches are made of acacia wood with SKU 400037765413 and manufacturer style number GB1F printed on a hangtag attached to the bench. The acacia wood benches measure 39” wide, 20” deep and 36” high.

Sold at: Ross Stores nationwide in March 2009 for about $90.

Manufactured in: Vietnam

Remedy: Consumers should stop using these benches immediately and return them to any Ross Store for a full refund.

Gothic Cabinet Craft Recalls Bunk Beds Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the importers named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Twin, Twin Extra-Large, and Twin Over Full Bunk Beds

Units: About 1,500

Manufacturer: Gothic Cabinet Craft Inc., of Maspeth, N. Y.

Hazard: The bunk beds do not have sufficient headboards, footboards, or guardrails and have gaps between parts of the upper bunk that could allow a child’s body to pass through but not a child’s head. These bunk beds pose a fall, entrapment, and strangulation hazard to children and violate the spacing requirements of the federal bunk bed safety standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: Both metal and wooden bunk beds are being recalled. The bunk bed styles include dark oak and metal, solid pine, others come with six drawers as part of the base.

Sold by: Retail stores in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area from June 2000 through October 2008 for between $225 and $850.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these bunk beds and contact Gothic Cabinet Craft Inc. to schedule an appointment and free repair.

Composite Decks Recalled by Louisiana-Pacific; Decks Can Deteriorate and Break, Posing Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Composite Decks

Units: About 48 million linear feet (decks vary in size)

Manufacturer: Louisiana-Pacific (LP) Corp., of Nashville, Tenn.

Hazard: The recalled decking can prematurely deteriorate and unexpectedly break. Consumers can fall through broken decking and suffer serious injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: LP has received 37 reports of composite decks breaking, resulting in 14 injuries, including a broken wrist, sprained ankle, minor lacerations and bruises.

Description: The recall includes outdoor deck board and railings sold under the brand names LP WeatherBest®, ABTCo., and Veranda®. They are composite products that look similar to natural wood and were sold in various colors including Tuscan Walnut/Chestnut, Driftwood Grey/Greystone, Pacific Cedar and Western Redwood. Veranda decking products were manufactured by multiple firms; only products manufactured by LP are included in this recall.

Sold at: The Home Depot (Veranda® brand) and building product dealers (LP WeatherBest® and ABTCo. brands) nationwide from January 2005 to August 2008 for between $1.50 and $2.25 per linear foot.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers with the recalled decking should immediately contact LP for a free inspection. If the decking is affected by premature deterioration, LP will arrange for a free replacement.

Serta International Recalls Mattresses Due to Violation of Federal Mattress Flammability Standard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Serta Zipper-Covered Foam Core Mattresses

Units: About 6,100

Manufacturer: Serta International Mattress Co., of Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Hazard: The mattresses fail to meet the mandatory federal open flame standard for mattresses, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recalled mattresses have a zipper cover over a foam core. The mattresses were sold in twin, full, queen, king and California king sizes. They were manufactured between November 30, 2007 and May 20, 2008. The mattress name, date of manufacture, model, and serial numbers are located on label attached to the mattress. Only specific serial numbers are included in the recall. The recalled mattresses are listed in the chart below.

Game Chairs Recalled by Brunswick Bowling & Billiards Corp. Due to Fall Hazard

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: “Colonial” Folding Game Chairs

Units: About 1,700

Importer: Brunswick Bowling & Billiards Corp., of Lake Forest, Ill.

Hazard: The retaining washers on the legs can loosen, causing the chair to become unstable. This poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Brunswick has received four reports of loose chair leg hardware. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the “Colonial” model, folding wooden chairs for use with game tables. They were sold in sets of two. The chairs have a black seat cushion and either a cherry or chestnut finish.

Sold by: Authorized Brunswick dealers nationwide from March 2007 through March 2008 for about $400 per set.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the folding game chairs and contact the dealer where the chairs were purchased to schedule a free repair.

IKEA Recalls to Repair Chest of Drawers Due to Laceration Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: �KVIBY� Chests

Units: About 5,000 (an additional 26,000 were sold outside of the U.S.)

Manufacturer: IKEA Home Furnishings, of Conshohocken, Pa.

Hazard: The glass drawer knobs on the chest can break either during assembly or in use, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: IKEA has received three reports of laceration injuries requiring medical attention. An additional 11 injuries occurred outside of the U.S.

Description: The recalled KVIBY Chest is white with 4 drawers and 6 glass knobs. The recall includes chests with article number 201-080-90 and a date stamp of 0817 (first two digits indicate the year; the second two digits indicate the week) or earlier. The article number and date stamp are located on a label attached to the underside of the chest. KVIBY chests with a date stamp of 0818 and later have improved replacement knobs and screws and are not included in the recall.

Sold at: IKEA stores nationwide from August 2007 through July 2008 for about $300.

Manufactured in: Denmark

Remedy: Consumers should protect their hands and carefully remove the glass knobs. Contact IKEA to receive free replacement knobs and screws by mail.

Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores Recall SmartSpace™ Chairs Due to Fall Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: SmartSpace™ Papasan Chairs

Units: About 6,000

Importer: Jo-Ann Stores Inc., of Hudson, Ohio

Hazard: The chairs were sold without a warning label instructing consumers to lock the chair’s legs before sitting. This poses a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Jo-Ann has received five reports of chairs collapsing when the legs were not locked. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves the SmartSpace™ Papasan chair. The silver metal frame chair has a circular fabric seat that sits on a 10-inch-tall base. The fabric seat used with the papasan chairs were sold in purple, pacific, lime yellow and gray. A hangtag on the chair reads “Smartspace Papasan Chair – 1 piece.”

Sold at: Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores nationwide from June 2008 through September 2008 for about $25.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the chair until a warning label, instructing consumers to engage the legs in the locked position before use, has been obtained from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores.
