Viking Range Corporation Recalls Built-In Refrigerators Due to Injury Hazard; Doors Can Detach

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Viking Built-In Side-by-Side Refrigerator/Freezers and Refrigerators with Bottom Freezers

Units: About 45,326

Manufacturer: Viking Range Corporation, of Greenwood, Miss.

Hazard: The refrigerator’s doors can detach, posing an injury hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Viking has received about 57 reports of doors detaching, including four reports of injuries involving bruises, broken toes/fingers, and strains. Also, several incidents of minor damage to floors and counters have been reported.

Description: This recall involves Viking built-in 48-inch wide side-by-side refrigerator/freezers and the built-in 36-inch wide refrigerators with bottom freezers with model and serial numbers with date codes listed below. The refrigerators come in stainless steel and various colors and wood finishes and are built into the kitchen cabinetry. “Viking” is written on the front of the refrigerator. The model and serial numbers are located either behind the produce drawer or on the ceiling of the interior of the refrigerators. The 42-inch wide or freestanding refrigerators are not included in this recall.

The first six numbers in the serial number are the manufacture date of the unit in [mm][dd][yy] format, e.g., serial number 051903G0000000375 was manufactured on May 19, 2003 and serial number F01250210170 was manufactured on January 25, 2002.

Sold by: Appliance and specialty retailers nationwide from July 1999 through April 2006 for between $4,725 and $6,400.

Remedy: Consumers with recalled refrigerators should contact Viking immediately to schedule a free in-home repair. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled refrigerator if the door isn’t sealing properly, is sagging, or fails to open and close properly. If the door is functioning properly, consumers may continue to use the refrigerator until it has been repaired.

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Wolfgang Puck Toaster Oven/Toasters

Units: About 7,040

Importer: Frontgate of West Chester, Ohio and The Home Shopping Network (HSN) of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Manufacturer: Kingpower Electrical Appliances of China

Hazard: The toaster oven can remain “on” after the toast pops up, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received seven reports of the toaster remaining on after the toast popped up. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled toasters have model #WPTOT010 with date codes 3608, 3908, 0407, 0607, or 0807 or model # BTOT0010 with date code 0207. The model numbers and date codes are located on an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label, which is affixed to the back of the unit. The black and stainless steel toasters have “Wolfgang Puck” or “Wolfgang Puck Bistro Collection” stamped on the lower front right corner. They feature a stainless steel handle on the oven door, three black knobs for controlling cooking, and a black push-down lever for toasting. Two slots for toasting bread and similar products are located on the top of the toaster.

Sold by: Frontgate catalogs and HSN nationwide from March 2007 through March 2009 for about $100.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the recalled toaster/toaster ovens immediately and contact W.P. Appliances for instructions on returning the toaster/toaster ovens for a full refund. All known purchasers have been notified directly by mail.

Six Reported Deaths Prompt Urgent Re-announcement of Blair Recall of Women’s Chenille Robes
Consumers Urged to Check for Flammable Robes

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Blair LLC, of Warren, Pa., are re-announcing the voluntary recall by Blair of 162,000 women’s full length Chenille Robes. Since the recall was originally announced in April 2009, Blair has received reports of six deaths due to the robes catching on fire. Five of the six victims were female, and all five were cooking at the time of the incidents. Three of the victims were in their 80s.

CPSC and Blair announced the recall for the robes after Blair learned of three robes catching on fire, including one report of second-degree burns. Blair was subsequently made aware of the fatalities after the recall was announced and after Blair had sent letters of the recall to consumers who purchased the robes.

The Women’s Chenille Robes have the following item numbers: 3093111, 3093112, 3093113, 3093114, 3093115, and 3093116. The item number is identified on a label in the garment’s neckline. The robe is a one-piece garment made of plush sculpted chenille, a shaped stand collar, and horizontal chenille front and back yolks and cuffs. The robe has a full-button front with seven matching button closures, long sleeves with self cuffs, a straight bottom with self hem, and two sideseam pockets. The robe’s sewn in label states: “100% Cotton, RN 81700, Made in Pakistan”.

The robes were sold in Blair catalogs and Web site, and Blair stores in Warren, Pa., Grove City, Pa., and Wilmington, Del., from January 2003 through March 2009 from about $20 to $40.

CPSC and Blair once again urge consumers to stop wearing the garments immediately and contact Blair LLC for information on returning the robe and to receive a refund or a $50 gift card for Blair merchandise. Mattel, Fisher-Price to Pay $2.3 Million Civil Penalty for Violating Federal Lead Paint Ban
Penalty is highest ever for CPSC regulated product violations

WASHINGTON, D.C. - As part of its commitment to protecting the safety of children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Mattel Inc., of El Segundo, Calif. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Fisher-Price Inc., of East Aurora, N.Y. have agreed to pay a $2.3 million civil penalty for violating the federal lead paint ban.

The penalty settlement, which has been provisionally accepted by the Commission, resolves CPSC staff allegations that Mattel and Fisher-Price knowingly (as defined in the Consumer Product Safety Act) imported and sold children’s toys with paints or other surface coatings that contained lead levels that violated a 30-year-old federal law. In 1978, a federal ban was put in place which prohibited toys and other children’s articles from having more than 0.06 percent lead (by weight) in paints or surface coatings. In 2007, about 95 Mattel and Fisher-Price toy models were determined to have exceeded this limit. Lead can be toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health consequences.

This civil penalty, which is the highest for violations involving importation or distribution in commerce of a regulated product and is the third highest of any kind in CPSC history, settles the following allegations:

  • Mattel imported up to 900,000 non-compliant toys between September 2006 and August 2007, including the “Sarge” toy car and numerous Barbie accessory toys, and distributed most of them to its retail customers for sale to U.S. consumers. The “Sarge” car was recalled in August 2007 and the Barbie toys were recalled in September 2007.
  • Fisher-Price imported up to 1.1 million non-compliant toys between July 2006 and August 2007, including certain licensed character toys and the Bongo Band, GEOTRAX locomotive, and Go Diego Go Rescue Boat toys. Most of these toys were distributed to retail stores for sale to consumers. The licensed character toys were recalled in August 2007, the Bongo Band and GEO TRAX toys were recalled in September 2007, and the Go Diego Go Boat toys were recalled in October 2007.

“These highly publicized toy recalls helped spur Congressional action last year to strengthen CPSC and make even stricter the ban on lead paint on toys,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Thomas Moore. “This penalty should serve notice to toy makers that CPSC is committed to the safety of children, to reducing their exposure to lead, and to the implementation of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.”

This settlement also resolves other potential matters. In agreeing to the settlement, Mattel and Fisher-Price deny that they knowingly violated federal law, as alleged by CPSC staff.

Distributor: Backyard Play Systems LLC, of Monroe, Mich.

Hazard: The retaining rings used to secure the gliders to the playset can become loose or detached, posing a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Backyard Play Systems has received one report of a retaining ring falling off. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves outdoor playset gliders designed to hang from home play equipment. The green plastic gliders were sold as an accessory to home play equipment marketed under the brand names Heartland Premium Play Systems, Yardline Play Systems and Backyard Play Systems.

Sold by: Backyard Buildings and More and Lowe’s stores nationwide and online at Costco.com, BettyMills.com, and BackyardBuildings.com from February 2008 through May 2009 for about $100.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the gliders. Backyard Play Systems is notifying all customers directly and is providing a free repair kit which includes replacement hardware and written instructions.

Hair Dryers Recalled by Vintage International Due to Electrocution Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: National and Sanyo Hand-Held Hair Dryers

Units: About 2,300

Importer: Vintage International Inc., of Hacienda Heights, Calif.

Hazard: The hair dryers are not equipped with an immersion protection device to prevent electrocution if the hair dryer falls into water. Immersion protection devices, which prevent electrocution, are required by industry safety standards for all electric hand-held hair dryers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves National and Sanyo hand held hair dryers. The hair dryers are made of plastic and chrome with a fold up handle and were sold in blue, pink, white and black colors. Model numbers EH-5202, EH-5215, EH-5216, EH-7911, EH-7912, or EH-7913 and “National” and “Sanyo” can be found on the hair dryer’s blower nozzle or handle.

Sold at: Various retail stores in the Los Angeles area from January 2007 through August 2008 for between $20 and $40.

Manufactured in: Thailand

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled hair dryers and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund or free replacement.

Bicycles Recalled by REI Due to Fork Failure

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: 2005 Novara Trionfo Bicycles

Units: About 260

Distributor: Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), of Kent, Wash.

Hazard: The fork can separate from the steerer tube which can cause the rider to lose control, posing a fall hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received two reports of forks separating causing riders to fall. Injuries reported include a fractured clavicle, broken teeth, facial damage and head injuries.

Description: This recall involves 2005 Novara Trionfo bicycles with Aprebic carbon fiber forks. The bicycles are blue and white with black forks, and have the name “Novara” printed on the bars.

Sold at: REI retail stores nationwide from January 2005 through August 2006 for between $720 and $1,900.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bicycles and return them to an REI retail store a free repair.

Bugaboo Recalls Strollers Due to Risk of Brake Failure

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Bugaboo Bee Strollers

Units: About 22,500

Distributor: Bugaboo North America Inc., of Hermosa Beach, Calif.

Manufacturer: Bugaboo Design & Sales, B.V., of the Netherlands

Hazard: One or both sides of the brakes can fail, causing a stroller to unexpectedly roll away on an incline. This can pose a risk of injury to the child occupant.

Incidents/Injuries: Bugaboo has received 121 reports of the stroller’s brakes failing. No injuries have been reported.

Home Depot Recalls Patio Umbrellas Due to Risk of Impact Injury

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Offset Patio Umbrellas

Units: About 60

Importer: The Home Depot, of Atlanta, Ga.

Hazard: The patio umbrella and its pole could tip over and strike consumers if the umbrella’s collar or sleeve is not removed prior to closing the umbrella, posing a risk of impact injury to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Home Depot has received one report of a recalled patio umbrella tipping over and breaking. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The patio umbrellas are beige with a brown offset pole. They stand 11 feet tall. The base is a brown cross about 18 inches long.

Sold at: The Home Depot stores nationwide from January 2009 through February 2009 for about $250.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled patio umbrellas and return them to any Home Depot store for a full refund.

Outdoor Play Sets Sold Exclusively at Toys“R”Us Recalled by Step2® Due to Fall Hazard; Swings Can Break

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Step2 Play Up Gym play sets

Units: About 4,300

Manufacturer: The Step2 Company LLC, of Streetsboro, Ohio

Hazard: The triangular hangers that attach the swing’s ropes to the upper rail of the play set can break, posing a fall hazard to children.

Incidents/Injuries: Step2 has received 17 reports of hangers breaking. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves Step2 Play Up Gym play sets. The recalled outdoor play sets include a platform, climber, slide area and two swings and have a model number of 797300. A red “Step2” logo plate is attached to the front of the play set. Play sets that have hangers with white plastic bushings are not subject to this recall.

Sold at: Toys“R”Us stores nationwide from January 2009 through April 2009 for about $400.

Manufactured in: China (hanger component), United States (play set)

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled play sets and contact Step 2 to receive a set of replacement hangers and instructions.
